General Purpose: As a member of the Emergency Department Team, the ED Tech provides direct and indirect patient care through protocols set by Niobrara Community Hospital to maintain safe and effective patient flow in the Emergency Room.  The ED Tech works under the supervision of the ED Charge Nurse and the medical direction of the ED Physician and is accountable for providing care within established standards of practice.  ED Tech maintains required certifications and skills by participating in continuing education, practical skills testing, and the re-certification processes set by the state of Wyoming.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
  1. Serves as the main registration personnel in the ED setting when patients present for care
  2. Performs duties and responsibilities within the scope of a CNA/EMT license as defined by the Wyoming Office of Emergency Services and Niobrara Community Hospital policies and procedures.
  3. Receives and carries out orders from the ED Physician within scope of practices, and performs closed-loop communication with ED Charge Nurse.
  4. Collaborates within the ED team (CNAs, RNs, LPNs ED Techs) to deliver safe and efficient patient care.
  5. Acts as a liaison between the ED team and the patient/family, communicating frequently with patient/family to update information related to patient’s condition, status, progress, etc.
  6. In performing all duties and responsibilities, serves as a role model for service excellence and patient satisfaction.
  7. Initiates life-saving measures, e.g. opening an airway, hemorrhage control, chest compressions, stabilization of fractures, cervical spine alignment/protections.
  8. Assists patients to and from vehicles and the ER.
  9. Directs patient flow in the triage and reception areas of the ER with direction from ED charge nurse
  10. Communicates the condition of the patients presenting to the ER to the Charge Nurse.
  11. Transports patients from triage to the ER treatment area at the request of the charge nurse.  Performs other patient transfers/transports as requested.
  12. Responds to patient/call lights in acute and ECF areas when needed.
  13. Performs application of splints, staple and suture removal, EKGs, oxygen administration, automated electronic defibrillation (AED).  Monitors fluid intake and output (I&O) and documents.
  14. Assists with interventions/actions including but not limited to gastric lavage, cervical spine immobilization, dressing change/wound care, hypo-or hyperthermia care, etc. .
  15. Stocks rooms/ED Bays
  16. Utilizes alternatives to restraints or applies restraints in compliance with NCHD policies and practices.
  17. Promptly reads and utilizes communication materials, especially emails directed to ED staff.
Other Duties/Responsibilities: ED Technicians will be required to assist with Medical Records clerical responsibilities per the direction of the Medical Records department.  These responsibilities include but are not limited to; filing of paper medical records, pull medical records both electronic and paper for review by the specialist, faxing and mailing records review medical records requests.  ED Technicians will be required to maintain continuing education credits associated with CNA Certification and will be responsible for knowing and following all organization and department policies and procedures.  An Emergency Room Technician will be trained and remain proficient in patient registration, documentation, charting, and all CNA duties.  Attendance at a minimum of 80% of department meetings is required.  Employees are held accountable for all duties of this job.
Education or Formal Training:
1. Minimum Education: High School Diploma/GED
2. CNA Licensure or higher
Experience:
1. 2-3 years in health care environment preferably as a Unit Clerk or CNA
2. Minimum of 2 years in computer systems or computer data entry
3. Minimum of 2 years in customer service or patient services field
Working Environment:
Working in a hospital creates a unique work environment of both confidentiality and hospitality.  The addition of an Extended Care Facility to the organization creates a level of expectation for the behavior of Emergency Department Technicians when interacting with the residents on a daily basis.  This is the resident’ home and as such requires an additional level of attention to detail from the Emergency Department Technicians.  An interaction with staff, patients and patients families also occurs on a daily basis.
It is important the ED Technicians be aware of the various mistakes that can be made with a varying severity of consequences.  These mistakes may include:  Failure to use appropriate time management (leading to tasks being done in a hurried or incomplete manner), incomplete disinfection, and mistakes with resident documentation or care.  Awareness of these issues alone may lead to limiting the mistakes made.  It is important to keep in mind that the tasks associated with the ED Technician role continually evolve to meet the demands of the facility and to keep with regulatory guidelines.  These changes will be noted by the Emergency Department Technician’s direct supervisor. Regularly used equipment includes ECG Monitor, Cardiac Monitor, Gait belts, Hoyer Lift, Stethoscope, Thermometer, (digital and regular read-out), Wheelchairs, Walkers, blood-pressure cuffs, Oxygen regulators, Computers and telephone systems.
