September brings us the opportunity to celebrate Healthy Aging Month. At Niobrara Community Hospital & Clinic, we value the health of our community members of all ages. This month, we are focusing on the importance of healthy aging and staying active to maintain a high quality of life as we age.
What is Healthy Aging?
Healthy aging is about more than just adding years to your life; it’s about adding life to your years. It involves taking proactive steps to maintain physical, mental, and emotional health, allowing you to enjoy a fulfilling and active lifestyle as you age.
Physical Health:
Stay physically active and exercise regularly. Aim for at least a couple hours of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week, along with muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days a week. Vary it up a little by incorporating different types of exercise, such as walking, swimming, yoga, and strength training, to keep your routine interesting and well-rounded. Stretching exercises are super important as well to maintain flexibility and prevent stiffness.
Diet also plays a large role. Focus on a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated, and reduce your intake of processed foods, sugar, and unhealthy fats.
Mental Health:
Stay connected through social activities and maintaining relationships with family and friends. If you’re feeling stressed, you can try managing your stress levels by practicing techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, and mindfulness. Keep your mind active by learning new skills, reading, or taking up new hobbies.
Regular Health Check-Ups:
Be proactive and schedule regular check-ups with your healthcare provider to monitor your health and catch any potential issues early, as well as stay up-to-date with recommended vaccinations. Participate in age-appropriate screenings for conditions such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, and cancer.
Other Healthy Habits:
By staying active and engaged, as well as making healthier choices wherever and whenever possible, getting older can feel rewarding and freeing! As always, thanks for being a valued member of our community.
